THE BURROUGHS & WATTS TEAM K. O. 2006 Champions.......City Transport A 2007 Champions....... City Transport A 2008 Champions....... Totton Rec A THREE days after clinching
the snooker Premier title on the final frame of the season, Totton Rec A
completed their first ever league and cup double. And
it was the youngest and shyest member of Darren Pearce’s side who was thrust
into the limelight to secure victory over defending champions Churchills’ A in
a high-pressure fifth-frame decider in the Burroughes & Watts team final at
Shirley Conservative Club. With
the score locked at 2-2, James Hoskins, who will be 20 tomorrow, chalked up a 41
break to beat Churchills’ former number one Jerry Warren. In-coming
captain Richie Martin, 39, said it was a “superb break” and added:
“Jerry’s a very good player, we didn’t tell James because we wanted him to
concentrate on his own game.” Hoskins,
who works for Southern Electric, said: “I was really nervous. I hadn’t seen
him play before. “I
was just happy to see the last red go in which was pretty much frame ball. It
was one of the highest breaks I’ve had this season and it’s probably the
best I’ve played this season.” Steve
Allen beat Mark McLean 46-37 on the pink. Martin lost 35-62 to 15-year-old Billy
Castle who made a 31. Greg Moore lost 22-59 to ex-pro Neil Davies but Pearce
forced a decider in the battle of the captains beating Dave Mumford 76-37. Hoskins,
who beat Warren 66-1, added: “I don’t know whether I wanted Darren to win or
lose because I didn’t really fancy playing last. I’m not too good with
pressure normally.” Moore,
37, said: “He carried the team in that last frame. “What
a season! He’s come in for the first time; he’s won the league and won the
Burroughes & Watts. The trouble is it doesn’t get much better than
that.” Totton
have now won the trophy, donated in 1950 by table-makers Burroughes & Watts,
five times. Churchills’,
formerly Eastleigh Conservative Club, are also five-time winners.
Pete Marchi celebrates 47 years of snooker in Southampton
once a grade A snooker referee, Pete Marchi has always encouraged players, young and old, to compete at their highest level Pete Marchi Cup Finals 2004 Champions...... Woolston Cons A 2005 Champions...... Locksheath WM A 2006 Champions...... Curdridge RBL 2007 Champions...... Salterns A 2008 Champions...... Salterns A SALTERNS WMC A snooker side
definitely do not want to enter the Peter Marchi Team Knockout next season. The
Warsash-based outfit retained the trophy with a 3-1 victory over Netley Central
A at Shirley Conservative Club. Salterns,
second in Division 2, will not be eligible to enter the lower divisions’
competition if they gain promotion. Neil
Raymond and Bill O’Donoghue both won and, while captain Robin Boulter was
involved in a “lengthy” safety battle, Mark Harrison beat Chris Cornell on a
black-ball game. Dan Hunter was the side’s fifth player. Salterns,
who also won in 2000, were forced to play the cup campaign with a bare five
players. One
of their top players emigrated to New Zealand and Tom O’Donoghue, Bill’s
brother, was cup-tied after turning out for the second team in the first round. Boulter
said: “In the league, Tom’s been our outstanding player.” “We
were very pleased that some of our players managed to come over even though we
had the semi-finals of the crib on the same night.”
