Finn record break
The
Churchills A star produced a 131 total clearance in his side’s 4-1
quarter-final victory at Locks Heath WMC. It was the 26-year-old’s 97th
competitive century. Home
skipper Jim Hunter broke off and Finn compiled the second highest break ever
made in the Southampton & District Social Clubs League, beaten only by his
own 138 league break in 2008. There have been 47 tons scored in the SDSCL since records began in 1949. Remarkably, Finn has contributed 14 of them. Teammate Nick Jennings is second in the all-time list with six. BURROUGHES

and last season Burroughes
& Watts Final CHANDLERS Ford Central Club
A have completed the league and cup double in the Southampton & District
Social Clubs League. The
former City Transport A side landed the Burroughes & Watts Shield after a
riveting final against Woolston Conservative Club A, who they had also pipped to
the Super League title by one frame. Teammates
and spectators hailed a trademark pressure clearance by Kevin Vane as the
turning point in the match. Mark
Benzey, who defeated Dan Hildyard to clinch the 3-1 victory, summed up the mood
in the camp. “It’s
not about me or anybody else,” he insisted. “The team was the winner. “We’ve
just proved over the season that we were the best team. “It’s
a nice, special feeling.” Chandlers
Ford’s Wayne Muddiman opened proceedings at Shirley Conservative Club with a
tidy 40 break against Ollie Tydeman. But,
attempting a deep screw for position, he fluffed a simple brown for a 51-point
lead with 51 on. Tydeman helped himself to three reds and pinks to set up a
tense battle on the colours. After
eventually sinking a long brown for the frame, Muddiman admitted: “I was very
nervous. I put myself under more pressure by going 40-odd points up.” Woolston’s
former captain Drew Farminer led John Mullane with a well-taken 31 break. Chandlers
Ford’s number one rallied to lead by two points with one red left. Farminer
cleared yellow to pink to level the match. Vane
restored the advantage by snatching victory from an unlucky Adam Nash. Despite
a miss-cue, an ‘in off’ and a bad run of the balls, Nash led Vane by 33
points with one red left. But after another Nash ‘in off’, Vane produced a
35 clearance to win on the black. The
33-year-old said: “He gave me one chance and I took it. “The
green was dodgy but once I got onto it, it was all there. It was a case of
holding my nerve, which I do pretty well. “It
was a big turning point and it gave us two chances to get the final frame.” His
doubles partner Benzey declared: “That’s why he’s so special; that’s why
he’s won two Southampton singles titles.” Chandlers
Ford skipper Terry Azor added: “It was one of the best games, under pressure,
that I’ve seen him deliver.” Muddiman
said: “Kev really did turn it around. “He
was never at the races. Then, one red left, Adam’s gone ‘in off’, and
he’s potted a good red and cleared up.” From
the moment Hildyard sunk a long first red but missed the black off its spot,
there was only one player in the fourth frame. Benzey,
Town Champion in 2001, capitalised with a run of 30 and left his opponent
chasing snookers on the colours. He
said: “As soon as he missed the black, I thought ‘I’ve got half a chance
here’.” Mullane
put the team’s success down to their ability to win “stupid” frames. “It’s
the team that matters,” he said. “That’s all we’re interested in. “As
they’re done several times this year, my teammates just pull out stupid frames
from nowhere. “That’s
why we’re winning things.” Ex-pro
Danny Zagaroli, who was due to face Woolston skipper Mike Finn if a fifth frame
was needed, said: “I was really pleased it didn’t come down to me. “It
was a fantastic performance all round.” Satpal
Hans, on the bench for the final, said: “Kevin’s clearance was superb and
Mark was awesome.” Frame
scores, C/Ford first:
Wayne Muddiman 63-33 Ollie Tydeman, John Mullane 46-68 Drew Farminer, Kevin Vane
59-53 Adam Nash, Mark Benzey 64-23 Dan Hildyard.
Burroughes

Chandlers Ford Central Club A meet runners-up Woolston Conservative Club A in
the Burroughes & Watts snooker team final at Shirley Conservative Club on
Monday at 7.30pm. The
league’s annual delegates meeting takes place at Bitterne Park WMC on Thursday
at 8.15pm.
DAN Hildyard recovered from
needing a snooker to beat Mark McLean (Churchills A) on a re-spotted black in
the decider to book Woolston Cons A a place in the Burroughes & Watts final.

SCOTT Anderson clinched the
Peter Marchi Cup snooker final for Bitterne Royal British Legion A in an
intelligent piece of matchplay against his opposite number one. Nursling
Social Club C skipper James Gregory insisted if it had been billiards he would
have “hammered” Anderson after suffering more than his fair share of ‘in
offs’. But
Anderson kept the scoreboard ticking over and played safe to secure a 3-0
victory in the knockout competition for Divisions 1 to 4. The
match-winner said: “(Gregory) was unlucky but everyone’s had that happen to
them. It just wasn’t their night - it was ours.” The
23-year-old dedicated his win to his former teammate, and uncle, Dean Everson
who died two years ago last Wednesday. Shirley
Conservative Club hosted the clash between the two Division 2 outfits and
first-time finalists. Alan
Shotter was never in trouble after an early 22 break against Alan Meader. Pete
Everson doubled the advantage in a tight frame against Andy Lemon that ended on
the pink. Both players struggled with the fast table. Bitterne
skipper Bill Anderson, Scott’s dad, said: “Fair play to Nursling. They’re
good lads. It was all played in the right spirit. “Ricky
(James Gregory) is a good player. He had some bad luck. Scott did the right
thing. When Ricky was getting a little bit agitated, he just played him safe
instead of going for breaks.” Gregory
said: “The second frame could easily have gone our way but the best side won. “I
gave the man 24 points in fouls. If we’d have been playing billiards, I’d
have hammered him!” Frame
scores, Bitterne first:
Alan Shotter 63-29 Alan Meader, Pete Everson 49-41 Andy Lemon, Scott Anderson
69-26 James Gregory. Not played: Dave Neary v Richard Fox, Bill Anderson v
Michael Fox.
PETE Everson (Bitterne RBL
A) managed to park the cue-ball on top of the cushion but still won by one point
on the black as his side marched into the Peter Marchi Cup final. In
fact, all three of Bitterne RBL’s frames against Acorn Social B went to the
final ball. Nursling
Social C won their third and match-winning frame against Locks Heath WMC A on a
re-spotted black. PETER

___________________ last years reports Peter
Marchi Cup final Botley Royal British Legion A are just Champion
IN his first year as
captain, Gary Still has delivered the league and cup double to Botley Royal
British Legion A. But
the former Premier player for Eastleigh Railway Institute insists it was a
“team effort” and that his side should be “proud of themselves”. Botley,
formed two seasons ago, cruised to the Division 2 championship and edged past
Division 1 side Hamble Club B 3-2 to claim the Peter Marchi Cup, for teams below
the Premier Division of the Southampton & District Social Clubs League. And
it was their young star Jordan Winbourne who beat Jason Stafford in the deciding
frame of the final at Salterns WMC, Warsash. Still,
who signed 14-year-old century-breaker Winbourne this season, said:
“Jordan’s obviously played number one. “The
reputation that Jordan receives upholds his own ability. As the season’s gone
on, we’ve got to know who he is. He’s very, very good. People have been
impressed with him as a person.” Winbourne,
who’s not eligible to play some away games because of his age, has lost just
two matches and has chalked up the division’s highest break of 67. Still
has enjoyed the responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband and reckons
this side can progress all the way to the Premier. The
36-year-old said: “When you’ve got eight people in the side, which is what
I’ve had this season, trying to keep everybody happy and rotate the side and
still get results, that’s what it’s all about - trying to keep the feel-good
factor. “I’ll
be confident that, if we stay as we are, we’ll be there or thereabouts next
season as well. I think we could hold our own in the Premier.” Frame
scores, Botley first: Chris
Winbourne 11-69 Tony Ramsey, Gary Still 70-29 Tony Brine, Mike Venn 25-49 Mike
Allen, Steve Norris 62-30 Wayne Brine, Jordan Winbourne 72-16 Jason Stafford.

Burroughes
& Watts champions Eastleigh Railway Institute C, from left, back row: Rory
Lord, Justin Mines. Middle: Danny Gallant, Mitch Wade, Dave Talbot. Front:
Richard Pacey, John Barton. THEIR 23-year wait to claim
local snooker’s FA Cup is finally over. Premier
outfit Eastleigh Railway Institute C overcame a dogged performance from Division
1 side Lyndhurst Workmens Club to lift the Burroughes & Watts Shield. Richard
Pacey, founder member of the Railway side, said: “I’m really proud of the
lads. “We’ve
waited a long time to win this trophy. I hope it doesn’t take us as long to
win it again. “The
next step is the Premier league; we’ve won everything else. It would be nice
to top it off before I’m in my box.” Shirley
Conservative Club hosted the 60th running of the knockout open to five-man teams
from clubs affiliated to the Southampton & District Social Clubs League. Danny
Gallant, the 2008 Town Champion, defeated Josh Barnes 62-23. Mitch
Wade, who won the pairs title this year with Gallant, posted a 49 break in a
69-22 victory over Simon Weymouth. And,
with the white close to the cushion, local legend Rory Lord potted the
match-winning blue into the green pocket to edge past Gary Cook 56-34. John
Barton led the team this season due to long-term skipper Pacey’s work
commitments. Barton
said: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rory grind a frame out like that –
painful that it was.” Pacey
added: “John’s done a good job all season so I left him to it. “I
want to get back running the team again. I miss going out on a Monday night.” And
Pacey paid tribute to their opponents from the New Forest. “They’ve
done really well to get as far as they have, especially beating City Trans in
the semi-finals,” he said. “That
was quite a shock result.” If
Lord had lost, Barton was confident that either Dave Talbot, home from Canada
and set to take on Graham Williamson, or Justin Mines, due to play Paul
Williamson, would have won the crucial third frame. “Justin’s
been on fire lately,” he said. Both
sides were making a first appearance in a Burroughes & Watts final. All

SADLY, Tom Trayhorn was not
in the audience to see his Bitterne Conservative Club A snooker side clinch the
Peter Marchi Cup on a nerve-jangling final black ball. His
funeral was held on the morning of the match. Skipper
Dave Poole paid tribute to the man who recruited most of the team. “We
wanted to win it for Tom,” he said. “Tom
retired but he kept a watching brief over the way the team was going. He was
absolutely made up that we got to the final again.” Trayhorn
died in his sleep on April 9. League
vice-president and WPBSA referee Peter Marchi, 79, was guest-of-honour at
Shirley Conservative Club for the 11th final of the knockout for teams below
Division 1. Division
2 side Bitterne Cons A, champions in 2001, took the first frame against
first-time finalists Q World B. Mark
Charrett defeated Steve Sherry, the 51-year-old lead singer of 70s band Phat
Funk, on the blue. Mark
Willcocks, 32 up with one red left, lost on the black to Alex Chircop. And
Simon Smith’s pink-ball victory over Keith Taylor gave the Division 4
champions a 2-1 lead. However,
Poole, 47, potted a frame-ball brown from in-hand to force a decider after
left-hander Lee Knapp went in off when a clearance looked on. And
to cheers from his team-mates, Malc Le Mesurier, who had trailed by 18 on the
colours, potted the black into the green pocket to end a long safety battle with
away captain Martin Smith who had missed a match-winning pink with the rest. “Chas
(Charrett) has been our rock for the last seven or eight years,” added Poole.
“I’m eternally grateful to the bloke for getting us off to a cracking
start.”

THE BURROUGHS & WATTS TEAM K. O. 2006 Champions.......City Transport A 2007 Champions....... City Transport A 2008 Champions....... Totton Rec A THREE days after clinching
the snooker Premier title on the final frame of the season, Totton Rec A
completed their first ever league and cup double. And
it was the youngest and shyest member of Darren Pearce’s side who was thrust
into the limelight to secure victory over defending champions Churchills’ A in
a high-pressure fifth-frame decider in the Burroughes & Watts team final at
Shirley Conservative Club. With
the score locked at 2-2, James Hoskins, who will be 20 tomorrow, chalked up a 41
break to beat Churchills’ former number one Jerry Warren. In-coming
captain Richie Martin, 39, said it was a “superb break” and added:
“Jerry’s a very good player, we didn’t tell James because we wanted him to
concentrate on his own game.” Hoskins,
who works for Southern Electric, said: “I was really nervous. I hadn’t seen
him play before. “I
was just happy to see the last red go in which was pretty much frame ball. It
was one of the highest breaks I’ve had this season and it’s probably the
best I’ve played this season.” Steve
Allen beat Mark McLean 46-37 on the pink. Martin lost 35-62 to 15-year-old Billy
Castle who made a 31. Greg Moore lost 22-59 to ex-pro Neil Davies but Pearce
forced a decider in the battle of the captains beating Dave Mumford 76-37. Hoskins,
who beat Warren 66-1, added: “I don’t know whether I wanted Darren to win or
lose because I didn’t really fancy playing last. I’m not too good with
pressure normally.” Moore,
37, said: “He carried the team in that last frame. “What
a season! He’s come in for the first time; he’s won the league and won the
Burroughes & Watts. The trouble is it doesn’t get much better than
that.” Totton
have now won the trophy, donated in 1950 by table-makers Burroughes & Watts,
five times. Churchills’,
formerly Eastleigh Conservative Club, are also five-time winners.
