earlier news

NICK Jennings fired in a 104 against Dan Hildyard as Churchills ended Bishopstoke Institute’s hopes of retaining the Winchester City and District Snooker League Division 1 title.

Four-man Bishopstoke were beaten 7-3 at home.

JAMES Hollick, 15, matched his highest break of 33 in a 1-1 draw with Rory Lord (ERI) in the Winchester City and District Snooker League.

Hollick’s C/Ford SC C side, a player short and bottom of Division 1 with just one win, lost 7-3 at home but climbed one place.

Suzie Opacic and Alex Dunkley take on Dan Hildyard and Billy Castle in the pairs final at Winchester Snooker Centre on Thursday at 8pm.

Bishopstoke WMC hosts a reps meeting on Wednesday at 8pm.

The league’s annual Triton Trophy for under-18s will be held at Chandler’s Ford SC next Saturday at 9.30am.

THE two giants of the Winchester City and District Snooker League are set for a championship showdown in March.

Churchills beat their title rivals and defending champions Bishopstoke Institute at home recently to take a two-point lead at the season’s halfway point.

Both captains see the return fixture on March 10 as the crunch match.

Mark McLean, who lifted the Division 1 trophy five times on the spin with Chandler’s Ford A before moving to Churchills, said: “The only threat we’ve got is Bishopstoke.

“We’ve proved we’re better than them because we beat them 6-4. It’s going to come down to us going over to their place.”

Bishopstoke skipper Scott McGaw said: “It’ll go down to the final game. Churchills have got to beat us to win the league. I’d say we’re favourites to win the league - again.”

McLean, who also leads Churchills A in the Southampton Premier, added: “I want to do the double.”

In the latest round of matches, Bishopstoke scored a 7-3 home win over Winchester Club. The away side took a shock 3-2 lead. Jason Hildyard, 16, was “well chuffed” after posted a 46 in a 2-0 victory over McGaw.

Churchills won 7-3 away at former champions Winchester Snooker Centre A.

McLean is close to announcing plans for a scratch competition in the South.

Week-nine breaks: Billy Castle 73, Adam Nash 71, Dan Hildyard 56, Shane Castle 58.
