League Division 2. THE two teams that last
season finished rock bottom of the Winchester City and District Snooker League
are in uncharted territory. East
Winchester Social, captained by Rob Watson, and Jim Paris’ Twyford Social B
are unbeaten in Division 2 after two wins each – one more than they each
achieved in the whole of 2007/08. Champions
Bishopstoke Institute, under new skipper Scott McGaw, lead Division 1 ahead of
Mark McLean’s Churchills, a team that was assembled just two weeks before the
season started. The
league has dropped the requirement to vocally nominate a free ball as it would
have contravened the game’s official rules. Tuesday’s
team knockout preliminary round: Winch Club B v C/Ford SC D, East Winch v ERI A,
B/Stoke Inst v Winch SC C, Worthies v Winch SC A. JOHN Mullane has scored the
first century of the 2007/08 Winchester City and District Snooker League. The
Winchester SC A star, who also competes on the European billiards circuit,
chalked up exactly 100 in his side’s 8-2 home win over Churchills’ A. Eleven-year-old
Jordan Winbourne (C/Ford SC B) recorded a shock victory over 2001 Southampton
singles champion Mark Benzey (B/Stoke Inst). But
the Institute extended their lead in the Premier with a narrow 6-4 win. Winchester
Cons B remain top of Division 1 despite a 3-2 home defeat by LOCO. Twyford

LAWRENCE CORMACEY kicked
off the new Winchester City and District Snooker League season with the highest
break of the week. But
Cormacey’s 53 was not enough to save Division 1 outfit Winchester SC C from a
4-1 defeat at Chandler’s Ford SC D. Captain
Drew Farminer led Bishopstoke Institute to a 10-0 victory over Winchester Cons C
to take an early lead in the Premier. A
45 break by Justin Mines helped Eastleigh Railway Institute A to top spot in
Division 1 after a 5-0 home win against Chandler’s Ford Central. Winchester
Cons A lead Division 3 with a 4-1 victory over East Winchester B. Nine-year-old
Shane Castle has become the youngest player in the league’s 36-year history. The
Chandler’s Ford SC B youngster lost 2-0 to Mark Vost (Winchester SC A) in a
7-3 away defeat. Premier:

A SNOOKER team containing four members of the fairer sex is just two matches away from promotion to the Winchester City and District Premier League. Captain Jim Everett’s gamble of signing on the quartet has paid off as his Chandler’s Ford D side is second in Division 1 with 12 wins out of 16. Everett’s team faces a home tie with Winchester Cons A and a final crunch match against third-placed East Winchester Social in the chase for the second promotion spot. Regulars Suzie Opacic and Paula Owens were joined this season by Sarah Osgood and drama teacher Alex Burton to compete in the male-dominated world of league snooker. Mark Andrews, Jason Terry and Sarah’s husband Lee, 25, complete the squad. Sarah, who has a top break of 17, started playing two years ago. The 28-year-old from Eastleigh said: “He (Lee) bought me a snooker cue for my birthday so I had to use it.” Opacic, 18, who travels to Cambridge next week for the 2007 Ladies World Championships, enjoys playing in the Winchester league. Owens, 34, the club’s reigning ladies’ champion, said: “The other teams are always pleasant and try to encourage us.” The squad’s fourth woman, 24-year-old Burton, who is coached by ex-professional Neil Davies, has yet to make her league debut.
Winchester City & District League Results from 22-02-06 103 break for John Mullane
Snooker Centre A's John Mullane made the
highest break so far this season with a 103 in his match at Bisopstoke
Institute on Tuesday.
John also made a 51 break in the second frame
against Stoke's number one, Adam Nash. Nash, not unfamiliar to century breaks
himself was forced to watch as Mullane compiled the high break. John's 2-0 win
helped Snooker Centre A to a 6-4 win on the night. Kevin Knight held Kevin
Vane to a 1-1, Terry Burden won 2-0 over young Mark Vost, Mark Burfield
managed 1-1 with Wayne Wright and John Knight lost to Centre's Dave Nunn.
Premier leaders strengthened their position on
Tuesday with a 9-1 victory at home to Railway Institute B. Mike Finn making a
75 break during his 2-0 win over Justin Mines, Mark Mclean beat Ray Long, ex
town champ Neil Davis defeated John Barton. Fourteen year old Nick Jennings
won his two frames against Richard Pacey and Railway's Malcolm Tomlin avoided
the whitewash by gaining a draw with Rory Lord despite Rory knocking in a 66
and 32 in two visits to win the first frame.
The league lost one of its longest standing
players last week when John Rogers passed away after a lengthy battle against
Cancer. John, who played his snooker at Winchester Conservative club up until
last season was well liked throughout the league and will be sadly missed.
