Ken Sydenham
The Southampton Billiards League's
prestigious Ken Sydenham Individual Handicap Billiards Trophy has been won by
Hamble Social’s Rob Shattock (+125
handicap and pictured left), after beating Chris
Christodoulou (+60 handicap) at Churchill’s Club, Eastleigh
Both players, playing in their first
final, started slowly with each of them not wanting to give anything away.
Shattock led by 160 points to 92 after both players had ‘double-baulked’
each other, but Christodoulou responded by making a superb 33 break – which
comprised of a ‘cannon’, 9 pot reds, an in-off white and another
‘cannon’ – to trail by 125 points to 160
Shattock raised his game and made a fine
14 break and a 12 – which cruelly for Christodoulou, included two ‘fluked’
pot reds at distance, to lead 188 – 127. Christodoulou valiantly tried to get
closer but Shattock was not to be denied, running out 200 points to 150 for a
memorable first individual championship trophy

WED
15 JUNE
Defending champion Wayne Crotty (Hythe Social, -35 handicap) faced
Chris Christodoulou (Netley Central, +65 handicap) and Rob Shattock
(Hamble Social, +125 handicap) played Malcolm Willis (Woolston Cons,
+55 handicap)
Crotty and Christodoulou started slowly, but the Netley player built
up a healthy lead coupled with his handicap advantage, and some fine
potting.
Christodoulou made a 41 break but Crotty replied with a 33. Crotty
then roared back with a wonderful 50 break which include 14
‘hazzards’ to narrow the gap. Then with Crotty needing 29 to win, he
made a 27, only to see his ‘winning’ pot red off the top spot wobble
in the jaws and this let Christodoulou in for a 17, and then ultimately an
in-off red to finish a remarkable game, 200-198
Woolston’s experienced Malcolm Willis played catch up against Rob
Shattock’s handicap advantage and found it difficult to make in-
roads, despite making a 20 break. Shattock played some fine long in-
offs and cannons to eventually win 200-136 to set up an intriguing
final against Christodoulou, which will be at Churchill’s Club
Eastleigh on Wednesday 29 June, 7.30pm

JOHN MULLANE wins a battle of
BILLIARD MAGIC...
It was billed as the battle of the billiard giants - and it did not
disappoint. The Southampton Billiard League's Gordon Lewis Memorial
Trophy final between Chandlers Ford Central team mates Daniel
Zagaroli and John Mullane proved to be a cracker!
The 2-hour final, held at Churchills Club, Eastleigh, started with
Mullane making a 29 break, but defending champion Zagaroli hit back
immediately, with a superbly accurate 102. England amateur
international Mullane fought back with runs of 46 and 52 but Zagaroli
replied with 32, a 13 hazzards 53 and another 32. Mullane then made a
fine 76 but trailed by just 6 points, 266-272 at the halfway stage
Zagaroli resumed after the break but failed to score with his first
shot and let Mullane in for a well crafted 125. Zagaroli
replied with 47 on his next visit to the table, but Mullane kept
control of the match with runs of 27, 23, 20, 31 and 20. Zagaroli
came back with 30 and 25 - which ended with a red jumping out of a middle
pocket!
With 20 minutes to go and trailing by 180, Zagaroli made a fine 72,
narrowly missing a pot red off the top spot. A 33 break with 5
minutes to go put him within 60 of Mullane but a 20 break from
Mullane kept the distance and at the final buzzer with Zagaroli at
the table, Mullane ran out a worthy 625 points to 555 winner

Handicap Billiards Trophy by beating Hamble Social, 975 – 870 in a
high-class match at Churchills Club, Eastleigh
The five player, individual handicap, first to 200 points format
tournament final, cued-off with Chandler’s Daniel Zagaroli (–160)
facing Tony Spridgeon (+75). The Hamble player started well and led
going into the last 60 points, however the Southampton Senior Scratch
Champion showed why he is the most consistent scorer of the past few
years by compiling breaks of 37, 67, 46, 37 and 42 unfinished to win
200-175
Chandler’s captain Terry Azor (–85) topped his team mates scoring by
making a superb 100 break to help him beat Will Mildenhall (+80)
200-140 and John Mullane (–150) played solidly to beat Hamble's Paul
Knights (+100) 200-159, making 43, 38 and 46 in the process
Veteran and ex-local billiard player legend Dave Wells (+60), made a
guest appearance from his Welsh home and found some of his 1980s form
to edge out Hamble's determined Rob Shattock (+125) 200-196
It was left to Hamble's Mark Spridgeon (+90) to salvage some pride
for his team. He played well to beat Chandler's improving Mark
Shirley (+50) by 200-175 after Shirley had made a 31 break in the
closing minutes
