Snooker Bonanza 2007 for Wessex Cancer Finals report on the Snooker Bonanza 2007, in this 28 year old event
Buzzin' B's are the new Champions. Pictured above are Dan Hildyard, Arron McIntyre, Alex Dunkley and Ollie Tydeman. Although there were no sizable breaks in the final, the boys potted steadily to beat Paul Tavenders City Transport by 3 frames to 1. Arron won the first frame of the evening with a timely and superb clearance of the colours, but in the second Dan could not get the measure of Scott McGaw who went on to win by 37. One apiece and skipper Ollie stepped in to secure the third frame with a comfortable margin. Alex clinched the match when he potted a difficult red to the "green pocket" and then took a further 4 colours, unluckly not to get the blue, but Buzzin B's were home and dry. (Semi-finals report) CAPTAIN Paul Tavender was “well chuffed” after leading City Transport to a Summer Bonanza final clash against Chandler’s Ford Buzzin’ Bs (pictured above) The teams won through this week’s semi-finals at Churchill’s, Eastleigh, and meet at Acorn Social Club, Fair Oak, on Monday. Tavender, 29, from Bitterne, paid tribute to teammate Dave Hobbs who was coaxed out of retirement. Hobbs chucked his cue into a hedge four weeks ago and vowed to quit the game after losing a money-match against his skipper. But after a change of heart and a fruitless search, Hobbs was restored to the side armed with a new cue from eBay. Lee Ashbolt beat Cue T’s Terrors’ Darren Pearce, Hobbs saw off Greg Moore and Scott McGaw’s 30 break against Rob Wilson clinched a 3-0 victory for the Portswood-based outfit over the 2005 champions from Marchwood. Tavender, who beat Steve Allen in the fourth frame, said: “Dave played really well. He’s a really nice chap and he won us the game, going 2-0 up.” “We hope to do ourselves justice in the final but I think we’ll have our work cut out against these young guns.” Ollie Tydeman led the Buzzin’ Bs to a 3-1 victory over Bitterne RBL C. Billy Anderson’s shock win over Dan Hildyard, 16, gave Bitterne the lead but Arron McIntyre, 18, levelled against Scott Anderson. Tydeman, 17, beat Wayne Hewlett and Southampton singles champion Alex Dunkley, 19, wrapped up victory against Gary Mills. City Transport last won the trophy in 1994 beating Totton Rec A in the final. Now in its 28th year, the handicapped competition is played throughout the summer by four-man teams from the Southampton area, and was initially started by Tony Aldridge in 1979. Tony ran the KO for 20 years, then Jim Everett took over, and has been running it ever since. All entry fees this year are being donated by sponsor Jim Everett to Wessex Cancer Trust.
(quarter-final report) OLLIE Tydeman led the BUZZIN’ Bs to a Summer Bonanza semi-final clash with Bitterne RBL C after a tie-break frame win over Dave Mumford’s Desperados in the Chandler’s Ford derby match. Mumford beat Arron McIntyre and Mitch Wade won a pink-ball game against Dan Hildyard to give Desperados a two-frame advantage in the return leg. Captain Tydeman, 17, pulled one back with victory over Dave Lovejoy. Alex Dunkley squared the match, firing in a 71 against his former coach Ken Jones, and beat Mumford in the decider. Bitterne eased past Woolston T&L 6-2 on aggregate. City Transport earned the one frame they needed at Cue T’s Destroyers to set up a last-four encounter with Marchwood outfit Cue T’s Terrors. Greg Moore (Terrors) won the crucial frame against Adam Nash (Bishopstoke Institute) to secure a two-leg 5-3 victory.
BISHOPSTOKE INST. face a tough trip to the Waterside after a bizarre Summer Bonanza quarter-final first leg defeat by Cue T’s Terrors. Adam Nash lost a black-ball game to Greg Moore, Matt Windsor lost on the pink to Darren Pearce and Gary Martin conceded, with enough points left on the table to win, after going in off the final pink. Captain Drew Farminer, whose win over Richy Martin gave the home side hope, said: “It’s one of those things.” Farminer is struggling to raise a side for Monday’s trip to Marchwood but added: “We’re quite capable of going out there and turning it around.” And in the Chandler’s Ford derby match, Desperados captain Dave Mumford called in late replacement ex-Saints star Ken Jones after Paul ‘Solly’ Solloway fell off a ladder and injured his shoulder. Mumford’s side drew 2-2 with Ollie Tydeman’s Buzzin’ Bs. City Transport need one frame at Cue T’s Destroyers after a 4-0 home win. Woolston T&L hope to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the return leg at Bitterne RBL C.
Draw for the Quarter-final matches to be played on Monday, 30 July, and the return leg on Monday, 6 August: C/Ford Desperado’s v C/Ford Buzzin Bs Woolston T&L v Bitterne RBL C Bishopstoke Institute v Cue T’s Terrors City Transport v Cue T’s Destroyers.
