English Amateur Billiards Championship

TWO players from snooker side Chandlers Ford Central A have progressed to the last-32 of the English Amateur Billiards Championship.

John Mullane won his round-robin group and Terry Azor “pulled all the stops out” to snatch the best runners-up spot in the southern region qualifier at Cue T’s, Marchwood.

In his final 90-minute game, Azor scored 605 points against Cliff Ayres (Harrow) to edge out Trevor Thorn (Basingstoke) by nine points.

“I was pleased with that,” he said. “It was exceptionally close.”

Veteran snooker commentator Clive Everton also qualified.

Meanwhile, Azor, 60, has been called up by the England seniors team (50+) for next March’s international against Northern Ireland.

BILLIARDS: Two Hampshire exponents of the three-ball game have booked a place in the last 16 of the English Grand Masters.

Southampton’s Terry Azor and Trevor Thorn, from Basingstoke, progressed through the English Amateur Billiards Association’s southern region qualifier at Cue T’s in Marchwood.

Azor, 59, won all three 90-minute matches and compiled breaks of 61, 55 and 51.

The final stages of the over-50s competition are in Birmingham on March 7, Thorn’s 57th birthday.

Tournament director Peter Green, chairman of the Southampton & District Billiards & Snooker Association, described Cue T’s as a “terrific venue”.

“They couldn’t be more helpful,” he said. “The conditions are absolutely first rate, as all the players say.”

Results: Terry Azor 470-218 Richard Barrett (Brighton), Azor 367-242 Trevor Thorn, Azor 317-211 Cliff Ayres (Bucks), Ayres 239-321 Barrett, Ayres 269-225 Thorn, Thorn 316-257 Barrett.
